A Seperate Peace Flashcards
How does the narrator feel about being back at Devon School?
The narrator, (Gene) feels like the school is colder, and more like a museum, now that he is not part of it.
How much time has passed since he was a student there?
Fifteen years
Why do you think the author decided to tell the story as a reminiscence, instead of staring his story in 1942?
I think the author did this because he wanted to write flashbacks.
Why do you think the narrator has returned to Devon School?
I think he returned to Devon School to see if and how it has changed.
What is Devon School like?
Its a boarding school, strong in both academics and athletics.
How is the narrator surprised by the trees appearance?
He is probably surprised that it is smaller, and looks more old, dried up, and tired.
What does he mean by saying he remembered it “as high as a beanstalk?
Its a simile, so he basically remembered the tree being very tall.
'’Change, i headed back to the mud.” What does this mean?
He realized that everything will change eventually, nothing will always last as how you exactly remember it.
How was the summer of 1942 at Devon different from what it would have been if there was not a war?
The purpose of the Summer of 1942 was to educate and train the boys to prepare them to be drafted.
What is Finny like?
Finny is really outgoing, a little rebellious, and mischievous.
Why did Finny jump from the tree?
Its a task the the older kids do before they go to the war, so Finny wanted to show that it is possible
How did Gene feel about jumping?
He was nervous about doing it but he did not want to back down.
According to Finny, what was good for Gene? Did Gene agree?
Finny said that it was good for Gene to have Finny to convince him to try more things and be more rebellious. Gene agreed.
The boys have broken a rule by missing dinner. How does Finny try to get out of it with Mr. Prudhome?
He says that they were getting ready for the war in case the drafting age was lowered. He tried to seem responsible and proactive to get out son trouble.
How does Mr. Prud’homme react to Finny’s explanation for trying to get out of trouble for missing dinner?
He let it go, especially because they aren’t as strict in summer sessions.
How does Gene feel about Finny’s explanation of why they missed dinner?
Gene feels that Finny seemed true and sincere.
Finny is a “model boy who was most comfortable in the truants corner.” What does this mean?
This means that Finny is good at pretty much everything, and he can still have fun and do risky things, without getting in trouble.
How is Finny different from “serial rule breakers”
When finny breaks rules, he knows that it is wrong, and he tries to get out of it because he doesn’t want to be in trouble.
As an adult looking back, the narrator thinks he understands why the faculty were looser with students that summer. Why?
Gene thinks that the boys reminded the faculty of peace. They were careless and wild.
How does Finny get away with wearing a pink shirt?
He said that he wore it as an emblem to recognize the bombing in Europe.
What does Finny do to avoid getting into trouble at the tea?
He, in a way, sucks up to the head master,
How does Gene feel about Finny avoiding trouble at the tea?
Gene was disappointed because he wanted to see more excitement in the situation.
Why is it that the bombs in central Europe are completely unreal to Gene and his friends at Devon?
It’s hard to imagine any type of war and imagine experiencing it when you live in a free country with no war inside of that country.
Where do Gene and Finny go after the tea and why?
They go to the tree to jump off. They wanted to establish a society of their friendship.
How does Finny save Gene’s life?
Gene lost his balance on the branch and almost fell off onto his back, but Finny stopped him in time.
Why does Gene envy Finny?
Gene wants to be able to come up with excuses and get out of trouble as fast as Finny can.
What is the society that the boys formed?
It is called the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. IT basically recognizes their friendship.
Why didn’t Gene feel very grateful towards Finny for saving his life?
He didn’t feel grateful because he wouldn’t have been on that tree if it wasn’t for Finny in the first place. Finny saved him, but if he died, it would have been on Finny.
