A seed plants Flashcards
List and describe the two main groups of plants.
seed plants and non-seed plants
Compare and contrast seed plants and non-seed plants.
seed plants need seeds to grow.
non-seed plants don’t need seeds to grow.
Compare and contrast flowering plants and conifers.
flowering: have seeds in flower, don’t have seeds in cones, big leaves
Identify the two main types of root systems.
Taproot: one long root, some small roots coming off.
Fibrous root: several main roots, many small branching roots.
Explain the four jobs of a root.
- roots keep a plant from blowing away in wind, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.
- Roots take in water, food, and minerals to help keep the plant alive.
- Roots also carry the water, food, and minerals to different parts of the plant.
- root hairs absorb water, food, and minerals.
List the jobs of a stem.
- Stems help support the plant.
- Stems have tubes that carry food, water, and minerals to all parts of the plant.
- Stems can store food for the plant.
- Stems connect to the roots to get the food, water, and minerals from there.
Compare and contrast two types of stems.
Woody stems: wood, hard to bend, taller and thicker than green stem, tubes arranged in rings.
Green stems: green, bendable, shorter and thinner than Woody stems, tubes arranged in straight lines.
Explain the jobs of a leaf and label its parts.
Stomates take in and take out food, water, and minerals. A leaf is where food is made.
Differentiate between broad and needle like leaves.
Broad leaf: soft, wide, simple and compound, large, wide, green.
Needle like leaves: like needles, just compound, small, thin.
Sequence the steps to photosynthesis.
Water is carried to the leaf, light is trapped by the chlorophyll. The water in the stem flows to the leaf. The light changes the water to hydrogen to oxygen. carbon dioxide and hydrogen join, food made
Describe the four main parts of a flower.
- The pistil: the pistil is the girl part of a flower.
- The sepals: around the bottom of a flower there are green leaves.
- The petals: the petals help protect other parts of the flowers.
- The stamens: the stamens are the male part of a plant.
Describe the process of pollination.
- Insect lands on steman.
- Insect flies to the pistil and drops pollen.
or
- Wind takes pollen off steman.
- The wind drops pollen on pistil.
