SEGREGATION
Being separated by force
REDLINING
Racist practices in which services (financial and otherwise) are withheld from people who live in poor neighborhoods, these people largely belong to racial and ethnic minorities.
LEFT-WING
The liberal, socialist, or radical section of a political part or system. Left-wing politics typically involve a concern for the “underdogs” in society, who people perceive as a disadvantage relative to others.
THE GREAT MIGRATION
The Great Migration was one of the largest movements of people in United States history. Approximately 6 million balck people moved from the America South to Northern, Midwestern, and Western states roughly from the 1910’s until the 1970s.
STIGMATIZE
To Label somebody or something as socially unacceptable
SELF-DEGRADATION
Defined as the state of being lowered down in respect, statues or condition. When a person has become disrespected and is looked down upon. (self-hate)
MARGINALIZATION
Involves people being denied degrees of power. Marginalization has the potential to result in severe material deprivation, and in its most extreme form can exterminate groups of people who do not have economical, social or political power within a society.
OPPRESSION
Is prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control.
INTERNALIZED OPPRESSION
It is acceptance by members of stigmatized races of negative messages about their own abilities & worth, Characterized by their not believing in themselves or others that look like them.
SYSTEMATIC OPPRESSION
Defined as the lack of access to goods services and good opportunity of a society. It is the unique exercise of authority & power by one group over another. It includes imposing one group`s belief system, values and life ways over another group.
STEREOTYPE
Widely held (many people tend to believe and udea) but oversimplified or degrading, image or idea of a particular type or person or thing.
MINSTREL SHOW
Shows were a type of stage environment featuring songs, dances & formulaic comics based on stereotyped depictions of black Americans & typically performed by wite actors with blackened faces. It developed in the US in the early and mid 19th century and was widely performed until the mid 20th century but is now regarded as highly offensive.
