A Quoi Bon Dire Flashcards
What is A Quoi Bon Dire about ?
Is about loss and ageing, it shows the realities of age and mortality but also implies that relationships can exist after death.
How do the two texts show the importance of love and convey it to transcend death?
A Quoi Bon Dire shows the importance of love due to the technique of the capitalised G.
In Tess the love is important and due to this importance the love lives on through Angel and Liza-Lu.
What is a difference between the two texts? - based on the disruption of love.
A Quoi Bon Dire shows that their has been no disruption in their loving relationship, so there love hasn’t been altered. This is shown through the technique of sibilance.
In Tess the love between Tess and Angel is disrupted in many ways; social class, Tess’s sacrifice, injustice etc… But all these things contribute to the love being broken down and continuing in someone else. This being Angel and Liza-Lu.
What are the possible themes that could relate to both texts?
- Importance of love
- Love can transcend death
- Disruption in lovers relationship
- Loss of love through death
What is the context of A Quoi Bon Dire?
Charlotte Mew was active in the women’s suffrage movement.
She is a by-sexual.
She lived in difficult circumstances and suffered from a mental illness which led her to kill herself after the death of one sister.
She had two siblings who suffered from a mental illness.
Mew clearly states that love lasts for ever despite the death of a lover. Compare this to Tess’s views as to weather her relationship with Angel will last.
On one hand Tess thinks the love could last through her sister.
But she does also say “Angel, I am almost glad - yes glad! This happiness could not have lasted. It was too much.” This is implying that the love couldn’t have lasted due to the circumstances.
