A & P Skin Flashcards
What’s the largest organ in the body?
The skin
What are the 7 functions of the skin?
Sensation Heat regulation Absorption Protection Excretion Secretion Vitamin D Production
What are the three main layers of the skin?
Epidermis
Dermis
Hyperdermis (Subcutaneous layer)
What are the five layers of the Epidermis
Stratum Corneum (Horny Layer) Stratum Lucidum (Clear Layer) Stratum Granulosum (Granular Layer) Stratum Spinosum (Prickle Cell Layer) Status Germinativum (Basal Layer)
What is the state of the cells in the Germinativum zone
Living
Name two proteins found in the skin
Collagen and Elastin
What is another name for the sudoriferous glands?
Sweat glands
Name two types of sweat glands
Eccrine and Apocrine
Where are eccrine glands found
Everywhere
Where are Apocrine Glands found?
Groin and armpits
What is the subcutaneous Layer mostly made up of?
Adipose tissue
Where are Melanocytes found
In the Stratum Germinativum
What are reticular fibres?
Fine branching patterns in connective tissue to link bundles of collagen fibres
How much of the weight of skin does Collagen make up?
About 75%
What does elastin do?
Keeps skin supple and resilient and holds collagen in place
What does Collagen do
Keeps skin plump and provides strength
What is the Papillary Layer
Under Epidermis and has fine strands of elastic tissue
What’s in the Papillary Layer
Nerve endings, blood and lymphatic capillaries that supply blood and nutrients to allow mitosis
What’s the Reticular Layer like
It is the thickest part of the dermis and contains a dense network of protein fibres (collagen and elastin)
What’s in the reticular Layer
Roots of the hair, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, lymphatic vessels, receptors, nails and blood vessels
Where is dermis thinnest?
Eyelids, palm of hands and soles of feet
Where is adipose tissue found?
Around organs and under the skin
What is adipose tissue adapted to store?
Fat which is a reserve for food when energy intake is less than output
Does adipose tissue vary in thickness?
Yes based on age, sex and general health. Typically thicker in men than women
