A&P of Reproductive System Flashcards
Why do Gametes differ from other cellular types?
They only include 1/2 of genetic material.
Gametes include which types of cells?
Sperm and eggs (ovum)
A zygote combines to form a full set of genetic material from what?
The uniting of sperm and egg nuclei
What is produced in the testes?
Sperm
Epididymis:
Tightly coiled tube on back of each testis where sperm mature.
Pathway of sperm during sexual arousal:
Sperm go from epididymis through duct system of vas deferens, then through the prostate gland (prostate, seminal vesicle, bulbourethral gland add nutrients/lubricating fluid to create semen), then finally, urethra.
How and where can fertilization occur in female?
Fertilization can occur if the sperm meets the egg by traveling through the cervix and continuing into the fallopian tubes where it can meet an ovum.
Ovaries are what?
Female gonads that contain 100’s of immature eggs.
The fallopian tube(s) are what?
Passageway into muscular uterus.
Pathway of mature ovum:
Released from ovary, goes into fallopian tube and travels towards uterus.
If fertilized, where will ovum implant?
Into the uterine endometrial lining.
Purpose of placenta:
Maintains exchange of nutrients/wastes between mother and fetus.
Full-term baby at how many week?
40 weeks.
Pituitary gland is master control gland. It secretes FSH and LH, which stand for what?
Follicule-stimulating hormone and Luteinizing hormone.
In males, FSH and LH serve what function(s)?
FSH promotes sperm production and LH controles production of testosterone in testes.
