What is anatomical position?
standing upright, head level, eyes facing forward, feet flat, arms at sides, palms faced forward
Superior and Inferior
above and below
The heart is superior to the liver.
The stomach is inferior to the lungs.
Posterior and Anterior
back and front
The esophagus is posterior to the trachea.
The sternum is anterior to the heart.
Lateral and Medial
farther from the midline and closer to the midline
The lungs are lateral to the heart.
The ulna is medial to the radius.
Proximal and Distal
closer to the point of attachment and farther from the point of attachment
The humerus is proximal to the radius.
The phalanges are distal to the carpals.
Superficial and Deep
closer to the surface and closer to the bone
The ribs are superficial to the lungs.
The ribs are deep to the skin of the chest and back.
STUDY ALL REGIONAL TERMS!!
Sagittal Plane
midsagittal plane - divides the body into equal left and right parts
parasagittal plane - divides the body into unequal left and right parts
Frontal
divides anterior from posterior (front from back)
Transverse
divides superior from inferior (top from bottom)
Oblique
any combination of the above planes of section
Cranial Cavity
head
Vertebral Cavity
spinal cord
Thoracic Cavity
chest
Diaphragm
in between the thoracic and abdominopelvic
Abdominopelvic
lower body
Left and Right Pleural Cavities
1 lung per cavity
Pericardial Cavity
heart
Abdominal Cavity
liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, pancreas, small and large intestine, kidneys, adrenal glands
Peritoneal Cavity
also includes the liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, pancreas, small intestine, and parts of large intestine
Pelvic Cavity
small intestine, large intestine, urinary bladder, appendix, and reproductive organs
Serous Membrane
filled with serous fluid (lubricates between 2 layers) between the layers; every serous membrane has 2 layers - parietal (on the outside) and visceral (touches the surface of the organ)
3 Types of Serous Membrane: Pericardium
serous membrane surrounding pericardial cavity (heart)
3 Types of Serous Membrane: Pleura
serous membrane surrounding pleural cavities (lungs)
3 Types of Serous Membrane: Peritoneum
serous membrane surrounding abdominopelvic organs
