A&P Lab Exercise 1&2 Flashcards
Posterior
Back side
Anterior
Front side
Ventral
Synonymous with anterior, front side
Dorsal
Synonymous with posterior, back side
Deep
Within, underneath skin
Superficial
Skin level, above
Lateral
Moving away from the midline
Medial
Moving closer to midline
Superior
Higher on body
Inferior
Lower on body
Proximal
Refers to appendages, up towards midline
Distal
Refers to appendages, down away from midline
Sagittal
Plane cutting body into left and right sections
Transverse
Plane cutting body into superior and inferior portions
Coronal
(Frontal) plane cutting body into anterior and posterior sections
2 main body cavities
Dorsal and Ventral
Components of dorsal cavity
Cranial cavity
Spinal (vertebral) cavity
Components of ventral cavity (2)
Thoracic cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity
What muscle divides the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities?
Diaphragm
Components of thoracic cavity
Pleural cavities
Pericardial cavity
Mediastinum
What is the pleural cavity made of?
Lungs
What is the pericardial cavity made of?
Heart
What is the mediastinum made of?
Midline: heart, lungs, thymus, esophagus
What is another word for the Abdominal cavity?
Peritoneal
Which membrane lies against the wall of the cavity?
Parietal
Which membrane covers the organ?
Visceral
What is pleuracy?
When membranes rub against one another use to lack of serous fluid
What is in between the parietal and visceral membranes?
Serous fluid which allows space and fluid in between the membranes so they don’t stick and can slide
Which membrane has more nerves?
Parietal
Why does it hurt when you have appendicitis?
The appendix swells and pushes against the parietal membrane. The sticking if the membranes combines with lots of nerves in parietal causes pain.
What is a serous membrane
Clearish, sticky membrane that surrounds and lines organs
What are the functions of the lungs?
To breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide
What is the function of the heart?
To pump blood throughout the body
What is the function of the diaphragm?
It is the main muscle used to breathe
What is the function of the liver?
Filled with enzymes Conversion Containing site Metabolizes Makes bike
What is the function of the spleen?
Blood filter- major player in the immune system
Located below left diaphragm
What is the function if the fall bladder?
Stores the bile the liver made. (Located behind the liver)
What is the function of the stomach?
Contains digestion foods, churns food
What is the function of the small intestine?
Most absorption occurs here
What is the function of the large intestine?
Water absorption occurs here, excretes waste and compacts waste
What is the function of the pancreas?
Makes enzymes for digestion, eyelets of langerhaun make glucagon and insulin. Located tucked behind large intestine.
What is the function of the rectum?
End of large intestine, excretes waste
What is the function of the kidney?
Filters and gets rid of urine
Maintains blood volume and pressure
What are the functions of the ureters?
Tubes off of kidneys that drain the bladder
What is the function of the appendix?
Full of lymphatic tissue, maybe plays a role in the immune system? Located hanging off the large intestine
What are the functions of the adrenal glands?
Located above kidneys, part of nervous and endocrine systems.
What is the inner part of the adrenal glands called and what’s it’s function?
Adrenal medulla-makes epinephrine (adrenaline)
What is the outer part of the adrenal glands called and what’s it’s function?
Cortex-makes other hormones like:
Cortisol-stress
Sex steroids-estrogen/testosterone
Alosterone-blood pressure
What is the function of the aorta?
Main blood vessel in the body, largest artery
What is the function of the inferior vena cava?
Largest vein in the body
What is the ocular lens?
What you look through, 10X
What is the tube?
Supports the ocular lens
What is the nosepiece?
Holds the objective lens and revolves
What are the objective lenses?
Scanning-4X
Low power objective-10X
High power objective-40X
Oil immersion objective-100X
What is the slide holder assembly?
Calipers hold the slide
What is the stage?
The platform that holds the slide
What are the coarse/fine adjustment knobs?
Coarse-used for simple focus
Fine-used for sharp focus
What is the arm?
Connects the tube to the base, where you carry the microscope
What is the base?
Bottom flat surface for support of microscope
What is the illuminator?
The light source built into the base
What is the condenser?
Lenses that concentrate light to the level of the stage
What is the iris diaphragm?
Opens and closes to regulate the amount of light passing through the stage opening to the slide
