A&P lab Flashcards
Name the 4 tissue categories
Connective tissue, Epithelial tissue, Nerve tissue, Muscle tissue
What is tissue?
Two or more cells that share a common structure, function, & embryological organ
What is epithelial tissue?
Composed of closely packed cells
Characteristics of epithelial tissue
Covers the body’s surface, lines internal cavities
Functions: Diffusion, secretion, absorption,filteration, protection
Connective tissue
is composed of a few cells surrounded by lots of extracellular matrix (fibers, fluids, minerals)
Mesenchyme
embryologic connective tissue
Characteristics of connective tissue
Most abundant tissue, found everywhere except for body surfaces
Bind, support, protect, insulate, transport
Connective tissues are made up of?
Ground substances, fibers, cells
Ground substance
is the unstructured material (fluid) that fills the space between the cells and contains the fibers. It is made up of interstitial fluid, cell adhesion proteins, and proteoglycans.
Extracellular matrix
is made up of the ground substance and the fibers.
What are the 3 types of fibers?
Collagen fibers, elastic fibers, reticular fibers
Collagen fibers
Most abundant; provide tensile strength; found in bone, cartilage, tendon, ligaments
Elastic fibers
Elastin protein allows them to stretch and recoil; found in skin, lungs, and blood vessel walls
Reticular fibers
Short, branching fibers that surround small blood vessels and support soft tissue of some organs
Types of loose connective tissue
Areolar, Adipose, Reticular
