A&P II Test 1 Flashcards
Characteristics of Life
Irritibility (responsiveness): Ability of an organism to sense changes inside & outside of our body. Digestion, respiration, circulation, movement, growth, reproduction, absorption, assimilation, and excretion are also characteristics.
Metabolism
All the chemical reactions that occur within cells that result in either the use or storage of energy.
Needs of an organism
Oxygen, food, water, heat, & pressure (atmospheric). Seal Level (SL)- 760mmHg Oxygen 21% Nitrogen 78% Others 1% Partial pressure: 760 x .21 = 159.60mmHg
Homestasis
Stable internal environment in the body
Negative feedback
Anything that is too high or too low which causes our body to make changes.
Heat Stress
Too long in sun- hot environment
Heat exhaustion
Fatigue, low fever
Heat stroke
Life threatning, increase body tempature, not sweating.
Pyhsiolgical response for heat related disorders
Sweating, & vasodilation. Negative feedback triggers the physilogical response.
Hypoxia
Low blood oxygen
Hypothermia physilogical response
Vasoconstriction- bloods stays internal to keep the organs going.
Shivering-muscles shake causing heat.
Levels of organization
Atoms-smallest units molecules macromolecules cells tissues organs organ system organism
Nucleus contains:
Protons- + charge
Neutrons: neutral charge
Elections: - charge
Atomic number
Is the number of protons found in an atom.
Atomic weight
The number of protons + the number of neutrons in an atom.
