19
Q

What are the three branches of CN V

A
  1. Opthalamic division
  2. Maxillary division
  3. Mandibular division
20
Q

What sensory fibers does CN V supply?

A

To face, scalp, cornea, and oral/nasal cavities

21
Q

What motor fibers does CN V supply?

A

Muscles of mastication

22
Q

What afferent impulses does CN V transmit?

A

Touch, temperature, and pain

23
Q

What is the opthalamic division?

A

Sensory from the skin of the scalp, upper eyelid, and nose, nasal cavity, cornea, lacrimal gland

24
Q

What is the maxillary division?

A

Sensory from nasal cavity mucosa, palate, upper teeth, skin of cheek, upper lip, and lower eyelid

25
Q

What is the mandibular division?

A

Sensory impulses from anterior tongue, lower teeth, skin of chin, temporal scalp.
Motor fibers to and carries proprioceptors from muscles of mastication

26
Q

Is the abducens sensory or motor?

A

Motor

27
Q

What extraocular muscle does the abducens innervate?

A

Lateral rectus

28
Q

What does the abducens control?

A

Conveps proprioceptor impulses from lateral rectus to the brain, and abducts the eyeball

29
Q

Is CN VII sensory or motor?

A

Mixed

30
Q

What are the main functions of CN VII?

A
  1. Facial expression
  2. Motor impulses to skeletal muscles of face (not mastication muscles)
  3. Sensory impulses from taste buds of anterior 2/3 of tongue
  4. Autonomic fibers to lacrimal, submandibular, and nasal mucosa glands
31
Q

What are the five branches of CN VII?

A
  1. Temporal
  2. Zygomatic
  3. Buccal
  4. Mandibular
  5. Cervical
32
Q

What is Bell’s palsy?

A

Peripheral nerve lesion with ipsilateral findings (peripheral nerves can regenerate so this can go away)

33
Q

Is CN VIII sensory or motor?

A

Sensory

34
Q

What impulses does CN VIII carry?

A
  1. Sound impulses from cochlea to the brain

2. Afferent impulses for sense of equilibrium

35
Q

Is the glossopharyngeal nerve sensory or motor?

A

Mixed

36
Q

What does the motor division of CN IX do?

A

Elevates pharynx in swallowing

37
Q

What does the sensory division of CN IX do?

A

Conducts taste and general senses from pharynx and posterior tongue

38
Q

Is CN X sensory or motor?

A

Mixed

39
Q

What does CN X do in the mouth?

A

Raises soft palate, gag reflex, swallowing

40
Q

What do the motor divisions of CN X do?

A
  1. Supply heart, lungs, and abdominal viscera

2. Involved in HR, breathing, and GI activity

41
Q

What does the sensory division of CN X do?

A

Blood pressure, taste buds, proprioceptors for larynx and pharynx

42
Q

Is CN VI sensory or motor?

A

Motor

43

What does the accessory nerve innervate?

A

Trapezius and sternocleidomastoid

44
Q

Is CN VII sensory or motor?

A

Motor

45
Q

What does CN VII innervate?

A

Tongue movement, contributes to swallowing and speech
