A&P: Chapters 3 & 4 Flashcards
What are tissues?
Groups of cells with similar structure & function.
What are the four primary types of tissue?
- Epithelial tissue
- Connective tissue
- Muscle tissue
- Nervous tissue
Where are epithelial tissues found?
- Body coverings
- Body linings
- Glandular tissue
What are the main functions of epithelial tissue?
- Protection
- Absorption
- Filtration
- Secretion
What is the apical surface?
The surface free of tissue
What are the classifications of epithelia?
- Number of cell layers:
- simple
- stratified
- pseudostratified - Shape of cells
- squamous
- cuboidal
- columnar
What occurs in a mecrocrine/eccrine gland?
The cell secretes its hormones into the gland
What occurs in an apocrine gland?
Part of the cell is pinched off and released into the gland.
What occurs in a holocrine gland?
The cell divides, then the entire cell is released into the gland to be broken down.
What are the main functions of connective tissue?
- Binds body tissues together
- Supports the body
- Provides protection
What is the extracellular matrix?
- Non-living material surrounding living cells
- Consists of ground substance with embedded fibers
What are the types of connective tissue?
- Bone (osseous tissue)
- Cartilage
- Dense (collagen fibers)
- Loose (cobwebby areolar tissue)
- Blood
What is bone composed of?
- Compact bone
- Spongy bone
What are the 3 types of cartilage?
- Hyaline
- Elastic
- Fibrous
What is a cartilage cell called?
Chondrocytes
