A/P CH 9 - Joints Flashcards
Other names for joint
Articulation, arthrosis
Study of joints
Arthrology
Fibrous joints
No synovial cavity, bones held together by dense irregular connective tissue that is rich in collagen fibers.
Cartilaginous joints
No synovial cavity, bones held together by cartilage
Synovial joints
Synovial cavity, united by dense irregular connective tissue of an articular capsule, and often by accessory ligaments.
Synarthrosis
Immovable joint
Amphiarthrosis
Slightly movable joint
Diarthrosis
Freely movable joint, all synovial joints
3 types of fibrous joints
Sutures, syndesmoses, interoseous membranes
Sutures
Fibrous joint composed of a thin layer of dense irregular connective tissue, only occur between bones of the skull.
Syndesmoses
Band or ligament, fibrous joint with more distance between the articulating surfaces and more dense irregular connective tissue than in a suture. I.e tibiofibular joint.
Interossoeous membranes
Substantial sheet of dense irregular connective tissue that binds neighbouring long bones and permits slight movement. B/w radius and ulna, and tibula and fibula.
3 types of cartilaginous joints
Synchondroses, symphyses, epiphyseal cartilages
Synchondroses
Cartilaginous joint, connecting material is a hyaline cartilage and is slightly movable to immovable. I.e between first rib and sternum.
Symphyses
Cartilaginous joint in which the ends of the articulating bones are covered with hyaline cartilage, but a broad flat disc of fibrocartilage connects the bones. All occur in the midline of the body. Slightly movable joint.
Epiphyseal cartilages
Hyaline cartilage growth centers during endochondral bone formation, not joints associated with movements. I.e. epiphyseal growth plate.
Articular capsule
Capsule that surrounds a synovial joint, encloses the synovial cavity, and unites articulating bones. Outer fibrous and inner synovial membrane.
Labrum
Fibrocartilaginous lip that extends from the edge of the joint socket.
Bursae
Sac lice structures to alleviate friction in some joints
