Amplification
Repeating a word or expression, but each time, adding more detail to it.
Analogy
Comparing two things that are alike, done to better clarify something by showing how it is similar to something else.
Anaphora
Repeating a word or words at the beginning of a phrase, clause, or sentence.
Antimetabole
Reversing the order of repeated words or phrases to show contrast.
Antiphrasis
One word irony, established by the context.
Antithesis
Joining together two ideas and juxtaposing them to show a contrasting relationship.
Aphorism
A short, witty statement about a principle or truth of life.
Apophasis
Asserting or emphasizing something by basically skipping over it or denying it.
Aporia
Expressing doubt and suggesting possible other alternatives without making a commitment.
Aposiopesis
Stopping abruptly and leaving something unfinished.
Apostrophe
Interrupts the discussion or discourse and addresses directly a person or personified thing, either present or absent.
Appositive
A noun or noun substitute placed next to (in apposition to) another noun to be described or defined by the appositive.
Assonance
Similar vowel sounds repeated in successive or proximate words containing different consonants.
Asyndeton
Consists of omitting conjunctions between words, phrases, or clauses.
