A Matter Of Trust Flashcards
(door opens)
Bout time.
(Jacob closes door behind Connor)
You want a beer?
Sure, I could use a cold one.
Sorry, no cold ones here. All room temperature I’m afraid. Have a seat, Conner, and we’ll get started…
Chill, man! I’m cool, I’m cool…
Dammit, Eddie, have you lost your mind? Let him go! We don’t want the neighbors on our asses, do we?
Don’ take your eye off this kid, Jake.
What the hell you on? I told you before, he’s good, trust me.
Come to daddy.
Haven’t you done enough shit tonight, Eddie?
Didn’t know you liked them young and innocent, Jacob!
Give me that and mind your own business! Now go sit your ass down!
Why the hell are my hands so sticky?
Conner, why don’t you take off your jacket and stay awhile?
Do you think we were followed? They know we’re here don’t they? You ever see anyone get shot near here? Why the hell does it gotta be so damn cold! Oh shit, that was a nice car…
Dammit, for the last time Eddie, sit your ass down!
(Eddie sits)
Finally. “Big Score”? Yeah, you could say that.
Sounds promising. Are you going to keep me in the dark, or you going to share what you know?
This is the big one, boys. This is the operation we have all been waiting for. Taber has given his personal blessing on this one.
Straight from Taber, eh? He must really trust us. What do we gotta do?
Just a moment. (hand envelope) Open it.
What’s this?
Our assignment.
I don’t believe this. Shifts, schedules, the entire layout, it’s all here.
Of course. Worked for months on this one…I want a smooth operation. We get in, take what we need, we get out. Quick, clean, simple.
Says here you’ll have a man on the inside. Anyone we know?
Congratulations on your new job, Security Officer “Callihan”. You start next Monday.
But how are we getting out of there? What’s our getaway route?
Well, that is one of the last pieces of the puzzle I need to sort out. You see…(take folder back) Hand me your pen a second.
My pen?
Yeah, the one in your jacket. Just gotta jot something down real quick. Write, damn you! Fuck, out of ink I guess. Need to figure out the local transit schedules…I’ll get it later. Look, you let me worry about the details. Just hold up your end and everything will be fine.
Can I take this all with me, you know, to study over?
Normally, no. But I guess we’ve been through enough together this year that I can rely on you. Just don’t lose it.
Yeah, that’s right baby, I’m your man. You want that ring, I got that. You want that sweet ride, I’m the shit.
Would you shut up and sit down! I don’t want the whole damn town to hear you, ya crazy idiot!
Taber’s an ass.
That ass is your boss. Watch your mouth or you’ll be buried in Cabo San Lucas.
Anyone who gets in the way will be dealt with.
No! No, no one needs to get hurt. This needs to go clean. Stick to the plan, and everything should be fine.
What’s going on Jake? Why agree to this?
This is the job that will end it all. Pay off all old debts.
To who? Taber? What do you owe him?
Yeah, he… Look, all I wanted was to be a businessman. Run my old man’s store, like his old man before him. Keep the good life going for my wife and kid, you know? But I wasn’t my father nor his father. I was a lousy businessman, and ran into trouble.
Taber brought me an offer. Put up the cash I needed to get outa debt and save my family. How could I refuse? Couldn’t let the wife and kid starve on the street because of me. So in return for his help, I had to go to work for him.
Ever since I been doing odd jobs, sending what little I can back home, working into Taber’s good graces. Earning respect, earning trust.
Trust. That’s a currency you can’t get enough of in this business.
She needs a father again. One she can be proud of.
So when Taber mentioned this operation, I volunteered us. We succeed and I’m done. I can go home.
I’m still new to all of this but I won’t let you down.
You and Eddie been good to me this year, so I thought I’d bring you both on board. But as far as Taber is concerned, you’re my responsibility. Don’t fuck up, don’t fuck us over, and don’t cross Taber. You go down, I go down.
