Allegory
A story, poem or picture that has a hidden meaning, typically a political moral, often takes the form of a story where characters represent moral stories
Allusion
Hinting at, or making an indirect reference to a person, place, event or idea
Anachronism
A person, object not belonging to the time period the story was set in. Often to connect with the reader and encourage them to relate
Anaphora
Words repeated at the beginning of clauses to increase effect
Anthropomorphism
Giving something human qualities
Assonance
Words that sound the same because of syllables/ vowels usually in poetry like the long “o”
Consonance
Blood, food, Word, lord
Words that sound the same between vowels
Epistrophe
A certain phrase or word is repeated at the end of sentences , a rhetorical device
Euphemism
Make something dire seem less so,
More polite, reduce the harshness without reducing the meaning
His uncle passed a way
He did a blow-off
Idiom
Used expression
Every cloud has a silver lining
Incongruity
When things don’t match when they are expected to
The wealthy women had no money
Juxtaposition
Two contrasting things , not directly next to each other
Oxymoron
Two contrasting things next to each other
Malapropism
Misusing words l that sound similar to create a sense of amusement
Texas has many electrical votes
Rather than Texas has many electrical votes
Paradox
Two ideas conversely in one sentence to create suspense for reader
Less is more
