Q

A recent study showed that Alzheimer’s disease may be partly inherited. Johns father suffered from it. John is keen to get genetically tested to see if he will develop it.
Explain why Johns genotype will not reveal whether he will suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

A

A genetic test will only be able to reveal the genotype and not the phenotype. Johns genotype will only reveal his set of genes. A genetic test will therefore only reveal if he is predisposed to suffering Alzheimer’s disease but will not reveal whether he will develop the disorder. This is because environmental factors may contribute to the disorder, so whether John develops Alzheimer’s or not depends on an interaction between inherited factors and the environment, not just the genotype.

Q

Use your knowledge of social learning theory to explain why the company wanted to use a famous rugby player in the advert.

A

They will have wanted to use a famous rugby player so that the process of identification occurs. This is where the observer associates themselves with a role model, the famous rugby player, as they want to be like them. This will then cause the observer to imitate the models behaviour. This mean that more people will buy the product in order to imitate the rugby players behaviour.

Q

We use schemas when we process information from the world around us.
Explain one reason why using schemas might be useful and one reason why using schemas might not be useful.

A

Schemas help us predict what will happen in our world based on our previous experiences. This allows us to react appropriately in situations that may be new to us without us being overwhelmed. However, schemas can distort our interpretation of sensory information which can lead to perceptual errors and inaccurate eye witness testimonies and memories.

Q

Jed was given a detention meaning that he would miss the football match after school. Jed felt extremely angry and kicked his locker at break time.
Identify and explain the defence mechanism Jed was displaying.

A

The defence mechanism Jed was displaying was displacement. This is where someone transfers their strong emotion from the cause onto a neutral person/object and expresses it out on this neutral person/object. Jed’s anger at the detention causing him to miss the football game is transferred onto the locker.
