Leadership themes, + meaning
- “Do as the leader wishes” - focuses on domination
- “Influence” - leadership is non-coercive influence
- “Traits” - leaders have certain traits
- “Transformation” - relationship between leaders and followers, that increases motivation and morality in both
Different views on leadership explained by the scheme of Bass
- Focus of group processes - leader main source of group change/activity and embodies group will
- Personality perspective - leadership is combination of special traits
- Act or a behavior - actions leaders take to change in a group
- Power relationship - power leaders have to change in followers
- Transformational process - end followers accomplish more than expected
- Skills perspective - leadership is capabilities; knowledge and skill
Four key components to leadership

Definition leadership
Leadership is a process where one individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal
Leadership key component: Process
Leadership as process, not trait or characteristic but tansactional event that occurs to leader and followers. Not one-way relationship since followers can also influence leader. (everyone can be a leader)
Leadership key component: Influence
Leadership would not exist without influence, key is to know how exactly leader effects followers
Leadership key component: groups
Leadership occurs in groups, so froup is required for leadership
Leadership key component: common goals
Leader and followers have mutual purpose. Goals same importance for leader as for followers, leader more likely to treat group in ethical manner
Trait vs process leadership
trait - no everyone can be a leader, need certain characteristics/traits
process- everyoen can learn to be a leader, it is about the interaction between leaders and followers
Assigned leadership vs emergent leadership
Assigned leadership are leaders bc of their formal position (manager)
Emergent leadership, people are leaders because of way group members respond to them regardless of title. Can also be is person is already assgined leadership. Important is positive communication behaviors and personality (dominance, intelligence, confidence)
Hogg’s New view on emergence leadership
Called social identity theory - Leadership emergence is degree person fits group identity. More attractive if person is similar to prototype
French and Raven’s model on the six bases of social power
- Referent power; followers’ identification and liking for the leader
- Expert power; perceptions followers have on leader’s competence
- Legitimate power; status or formal job authority
- Reward power; capability of providing rewards
- Coercive power; penalize or punish
- Information power; knowledge possession that others want or need
In organization, 2 main power exist
- Position power; power person has from certain formal rank, thus status equals amount of power. typpe of power includes legitimate, reward, information and coercive power
- Personal power; power leader has by beining liked and knowledgeable by its followers. type of power; referent and expert power
Coercion
is influencinf people to do something against their will, can include penalties and rewards. leaders who use coercion more interested in own goals instead of group goals. Not seen as ideal leadership model
Similarities Leadership and management
- both involve influence
- both involve working with people
- concerned with effective goal accomplishment
- essentional for the company
