A human interaction with the rock cycle - quarries Flashcards
Intro
One way humans interact with the rock cycle is quarrying.
Quarries are also known as open cast mines or pits.
There are approx. 350 commercial quarries operating throughout Ireland.
Plug and feather method
There are two extracting methods, the plug and feather method and sheer quarrying also known as channelling.
For the plug and feather method, holes are drilled into the rock. Two metal shims are placed into the holes.
These shims are placed in the direction that the rock has to break in.
The rocks are struck until the rock breaks.
This method is effective for limestone.
Sheer Quarrying (channeling)
Sheer quarrying is also known as channelling.
This is done to extract granite and marble.
Large steel disks or saws are used to cut the rock into blocks.
The rocks is that cut according to desired use.
Aggregates
Aggregates is a term used for rocks that are broken down into smaller pieces by nature or people.
The rocks are used for concrete.
80% of all homes, businesses and roads are built using Aggregates.
The Creation of aggregates are carries oit using explosives.
The rock is then out into a crushing machine to reduce its size.
Positives to quarrying
One positive is that it’s a source of direct employment like haulage or mechanics.
Irelands abundance of stone suitable for building is plentiful compared to the rest of Europe so international price fluctuations don’t affect us.
Negatives of Quarrying
The negatives of quarrying is that it has a negative effect on the environment.
The disposal of waste material into water supplies can be dangerously for local wildlife.
Health concerns from the dust at the quarrys are also an issue. It can cause respiratory conditions for people in close proximity to the quarry.
Quarries can also cause noise pollution and things like quarry lakes can also be a danger to the public.
