What are the 4 models of a doctor-patient relationship?
Paternalistic
Informative
Interpretative
Deliberate
What is the paternalistic model?
Where the doctor overrides or does not take into consideration an individuals wishes in order to promote their welfare.
Viewpoint is that the doctor has the expertise to make the best decision for the patient
Patients don’t usually have the knowledge to understand medical issues
What is the informative model?
The patient is aware of their values
The doctor provides relative factual information requested by the patient
Doctor= technical expert
However lacks ‘caring’
What is the interpretive model?
The doctor gives the risks and benefits to the patient
The doctor also helps the patients to say how they feel and what they want from the interventions
The doctor works with the patient to determine the patient’s goals and aspirations
Doctor=counsellor/adviser
Helps patient-doctor discussion
Deliberate Model?
The doctor helps the patient to select the most appropriate treatment option
Does not involve discussion of moral values unrelated to the disease or treatment
Involved doctor patient discussion and considers various treatment options
Could however result in a degree of paternalism or coercion
