Summary

A
  1. Ustinya tells family she has found a nobleman
  2. Bolshov + Rispolo comes up with a plan to avoid paying his debts w/ help of Lazar by giving the house and the shops to him in order to claim he is bankrupt and can’t pay back
  3. Found out Lazar is conning Bolshov and has made an agreement w/ Rispolo.
  4. Lazar has his eye on Lipochka + makes fake promises to Ustinya to convince her to get rid of the nobleman.
  5. Lazar tells Bolshov he is in love with Lipochka and Bolshov agrees to their marriage and says his dowery is for him to keep the house and the shops.
  6. Act 3, Lipochka is getting ready for the nobleman, Ustinya says he’s backed out, Lazar comes in and Bolshov annonces they are married whether Lipochka likes it or not,
  7. After speaking in private with Lazar, they speak rather frankly, Lipochka sees that by marrying him she will still have the goal of getting away from the house and agrees to his proposal, BOLSHOV SAYS HE WILL GO TO PRISON cause it doesn’t seem that bad (serene) for a while until the creditors accept a low fee as repayment - 10 kopecks per rouble)
  8. Act 4, 6 months later, living a life of luxury, Lipochka and Lazar, being alike, are seemingly in love
  9. Bolshov is allowed to visit from prison and begs them to pay the creditors 25 kopecks per rouble but they say it is too high and they have spent most of it.
  10. Bolshov goes back to prison and tells lipochka she will go to hell and the play ends will everyone telling how bad Lazar is to the audience and they end winning.

Russia, patriarchal society, only way to climb up the social ladder is through marriage, in my bedroom

what do I want?
I want to marry an army man - very fashionable or a nobleman / aristocrat if I must

why do I want it?
I deserve to live a luxury lifestyle BUT really want to get away from her life where he mother tells her to do one thing one minute and another the next. father doesn’t talk to her when he is sober and hits her when he is drunk.

how will I get it?
wants to marry nobility in order to get away.
