demonstrates the extremity of guilt, as , unlike scrooge he is unable to change his ways and and is therefore cursed with to an eternity of regret
the “chain” is guilt that he expresses that can never come off because he is passes away beffore making a change
additionally excalims how “no space of regret can make amends for ones life of opportunity misused” suggest how life is an opportunity for every one to do good and when it is not done and so commiting bad deeds , guilt is experienced which is futil unless we use it to fuel out change

“uneasy in his mind” - stave 2
ghost of christmas past shows scrooge his younger self with his little sister fanny . scrooge is happy but remembers fanny passed away reminding him that fred is his last survivning relative. when rememebring his the way he treated fred he becomes “uneasy in his mind” - suggesting how he felt guilty the way he spoke to him “his mind” suggst how scrooge interalise this guilt and can further suggest that potentially scrooge may want to change for the better
“another idol has displaced me” -belle- stave 2
the ghost communicates to scrooge the moment where he starts to become the man he is at the start of the novella . belle expresses her disapproval of the man that scrooge becomes , a man whos only concern is money and wealth.
“idol” being something that can be omnipotent - conveys how in the past leading to this moment of how much scrooge worshipped wealth and money which in this stave scrooge realises how much it has affected his relationship with belle ( one that was especially intimate) and expresses extreme guilt for it. futher suggest that he regrets what he has done and potentially want to change

scrooge is taking responsibilty for what hes done in the past (leaving belle for a “golden idol” - loss of love AND seeing the struggling chilldren (igorance and want and Tiny Tim- consqesuences of capitalism)
scrooges is sympathetic of them
dickens uses this exclamation to symbolise scrooge as an ignorant upper class man who takes responsibilty for societys capitalistic impacts
“honour” coonations to a knighthood and how important scrooge will honour christmas
“heart” something humans need to live - suugest how from now on scrooge will never live without christmas
i cannot bear it - scrooge - stave 4
when ghost of christmas yet to come reveals scrooges grave he has see;’s he concludes he dies alone. this is an extemity that dickens use to show that though all the ghosts dont force scrooge to change it has to come within and quickly begins to see error of his ways.
further more this can also suggest hiw scrooge cannot “bear’ the guilt he experiences and so want to change his ways
