A Christmas Carol - Marley's Ghost Flashcards
Who was Marley (to Scrooge)
His business partner
What does he warn Scrooge?
That he needs to change his focus in life from money to mankind
What is he weighed down by?
Chains and baggage that the represent the concern Marley had in life
What is he now desperate to do?
Help the poor and needy
What does he tell Scrooge?
He will have 3 visitors who will offer him the chance of escaping the same fate
POINT - Marley’s Ghost carries the concerns Marley had in life
- The chain it carries is made ‘of cash-boxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers, deeds, and heavy purses wrought in steel’ (p. 14)
- These items symbolise the things Marley spent his life on - they are all related to money and protecting his possessions.
POINT- It scares Scrooge (Marley’s presence)
- Scrooge ‘felt the chilling influence of its death-cold eyes’ (p. 14)
- Marley’s message is serious and there is nothing humorous about his appearance.
POINT - It verbalises Dicken’s message (about caring for mankind instead)
- ‘Mankind was my business’ (p. 18)
- It shows that caring for others is more important than making money.
POINT - It shows Scrooge the horror of not being able to help others.
- ‘The misery with them all was, clearly that they sought to interfere, for good, in human matters, and had lost the power for ever’ (p. 20)
- Marley’s Ghost isn’t the only one in this situation, clearly showing that Scrooge, and potentially Dicken’s readers, can also end up in this position.
