Q

Hockney - ‘A Bigger Splash’ - depiction of subject matter

A

The painting depicts a sundrenched swimming pool in California with a pink modernist building and an empty chair in the background. The silhouette’s of the neighboring buildings are reflected in the large windows, while two spindly palm trees and a neatly trimmed border of grass suggest a carefully manicured garden. Unusually, there is no one in sight and the scene is almost entirely still, apart from the splash.

Q

Hockney - ‘A Bigger Splash’ - communication of ideas

A

This further alludes to the sense of mystery and anonymity. Hockney’s inspiration from pop art is clearly displayed in the flat, brightly coloured illustration of the building and palm trees, yet he still encourages perspective as the diving board juts out of the foreground to add an extra level of dimension.

Q

Hockney - ‘A Bigger Splash’ - time

A

Upon visiting California, Hockney was intrigued by the relaxed lifestyle, filled with swimming pools and perpetual sunshine. Thus, he became fascinated in recreating such a transient moment in time. The delicate spray of water suspended in mid-air contrasts to the sheer stillness of the modern building, allowing the viewer to appreciate California in all its beauty.
