Adage
A saying that contains truth and is based off of an experience and filled with metaphorical language
Allegory
A story where characters and narrative have an underlying symbolic, metaphorical, or possibly ethical meaning
Alliteration
Repetition of the initial consonants in a group or words/lines in poetry or prose
Allusion
A reference to a person, place, or event meant to create an effect or enhance the meaning of an idea
Ambiguity
A vagueness of meaning; lack of clarity meant to evoke meanings and interpretations (intentional vagueness)
Anachronism
A person, scene, event, or element that does not correspond with the time/era in literature.
Analogy
Comparison that points out similarities between two dissimilar things
Annotation
A brief explanation, summary, or evaluation of text
Antagonist
A character or force in a work of literature that creates tension/conflict
Antithesis
Rhetorical contrast of ideas through grammatical arrangement of words, clauses, or sentences
Aphorism
Short, concise statement about a generally accepted truth
Apollonian
Refers to the most noble, godlike qualities of human nature
Apostrophe
A rhetorical device where the speaker addresses a person or thing not present. (Direct address)
Archetype
An abstract or ideal conception of a type; an original model or form
