A - 1 Natural Hazards Flashcards
Define natural hazard
A natural hazard is a natural process which could cause death, injury or disruption to humans, or destroy property and possessions.
Define natural disaster
A natural disaster is a natural hazard that has actually happened.
2 main types of hazards
Geological hazards, meteorological hazards
Define geological hazard and give 4 examples
A geological hazard is caused by land and tectonic processes.
Examples: volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, avalanches.
Define meteorological hazard and give 3 examples
Caused by weather and climate.
Examples: tropical storms, heatwaves, cold spells.
Define hazard risk
The hazard risk is the probability of people being affected by a hazard in a particular area.
3 factors affecting the hazard risk
Vulnerability, capacity to cope, nature of natural hazards (predictability)
How does vulnerability affect the hazard risk?
The more people that are in an area exposed to natural hazards, the greater the probability they will be affected by a natural hazard.
How does the capacity to cope affect the hazard risk?
The better a population can cope with a hazard, the lower the risk of them being severely affected.
How does the nature of natural hazards (predictability) affect the hazard risk?
- Type - the risk from some hazards is greater than others.
- Frequency - hazards that occur more often may carry a higher risk.
- Magnitude - more severe hazards tend to have greater effects.
