How to identify a noun as the second declension.
To identify a second declension noun, look to the second dictionary listing of the word. The second declension (aka the genitive case) will end with a long -i. Second declension nouns are either masculine or neuter. Masculine tends to end with -us or -r and neuter tends to end with -um for the first dictionary listing.
