9TH seed Flashcards
what is a seed?
seed is a ripened ovule which contains an embryo which develops into a new plant.
Germinated grams are considered to be highly nutritive. What is the reason for this belief?
seed cotyledon absorbs food from the endosperm causing it to get nutritive since it is rich in starch and the outermost layer is richly supplied with proteins.
Classification and Structure of Seeds
Albuminous or Endospermic
characteristics of seed
seed contains of endosperm
it’s a mature ovule after fertilization
types of seeds based on endosperm
albuminous
exalbuminous
Albuminous
cotyledons are thin and membranous
ex cereal, poppy
Exalbuminous
cotyledon stores food and become thick
ex Vallisneria , pea
types of seed
monocotyledons and dicotyledons
example of mono and diacotyledon
mono- mazie
di - bean
sead coat consists of____ which is the outermost covering which protects the inner part from bacteria etc
Testa
___ inner lying next to the testa
Tegmen
_____ oval scar which represents the spot where the ovule was attached to the ovary
Hilum
function of the micropyle
seeds absorb through it and allow the embryo to germinate
provides diffusion of the respiratory gases.
two parts of the embryo
radicle and plumule
why is maze called a grain
as the fruit wall and the seed coat is fused we call it as a grain.
