9H — Chemical Changes Flashcards
1) What are ions?
2) What are ionic compounds?
3) What are ionic bonds?
1) Ions are atoms that have lost or gained electrons.
2) Ionic compounds are compounds that contain ions of lots of different elements.
3) Ionic bonds are the strong forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions.
What is metallic bonding?
The type of bonding found in metals. We can think of it as positively charged ions in a sea of negatively charged electrons.
1) Why do metals conduct electricity?
2) Can ionic compounds conduct electricity?
1) Metals conduct electricity because the electrons can move.
2) Ionic compounds can also conduct electricity but only if the ions can move (for example, when the compound is dissolved in water or is liquid).
1) What is an exothermic reaction?
2) What is an endothermic reaction?
1) An exothermic reaction is any change that gives out energy to the surroundings, and makes the surroundings feel warmer.
2) An endothermic reaction is any change that takes energy in from the surroundings, and makes the surroundings feel colder.
What is a rate of reaction?
The rate of reaction is how quickly a reaction happens.
How is a reversible reaction shown?
A reversible reaction is shown with a double arrow.
What is a dynamic equilibrium?
When there are constant changes going on but these changes are equal and opposite and so do not effect the overall levels of something.
What is standard form?
A small raised number after a unit or another number to show you how many times to multiply it by itself. For example, 10 to the power of 3 means multiply 10 together 3 times (10 × 10 × 10).
