9.Binder jetting Flashcards
What process is Binder jetting similar to and how does it differ from it?
Binder jetting is similar to powder bed fusion.
The main difference is the powder is bound together with a binder material as opposed to being heated.
What are the two types of binder jetting and how do they differ?
- Visual (uses plaster or corn starch)
- Large scale visual and mechanical (Polymer/metal)
What are the two types of actuation in binder jetting?
Thermal - element heated
Piezoelectric - element shocked.
What are the pros of visual binder jetting?
- Fast
- Low waste
- Low cost prototyping method
What are the cons of visual binder jetting?
- Poor mechanical properties.
- non functional parts
-limited materials - poor surface finish
What is the main post processing step for binder jetting?
De powdering of parts.
What is an infiltrant. give an example.
Fills cavities in part and improves mech and thermal properties.
Visual - Elastomers, glue
Large scale - Copper
What are the pros of binder jetting?
- Fast compared to SLS
- Lower temp than SLS (less energy)
- New process so less old systems.
What are applications of binder jetting parts?
- Plaster casting moulds
- architecture model
- functional parts
