9Aa Flashcards
what is variation?
Differences between organisms
What is Characteristics?
features of the organisms that can be both inherited or caused by environment
What does the nuclei contain?
chromosomes
what is chromosome?
huge molecule of DNA found inside the nucleus of a cell
What are genes?
section of a chromosome that controls the inherited characteristics of an organism
What do genes carry?
genetic informations, which is the instructions that control your characteristics
What are the two names of a cell used for sexual reproduction
sex cells
gametes
what do gametes do?
they transfer genes from parents to offspring
How many chromosomes do the nuclei of gametes contain?
half the chromosomes of normal cells(23)
Explain the process of reproduction
- fertilisation
one sperm cell enters an ovum(egg cell)
two nuclei fuse to form a complete set of genes (fertilised egg cell) - cell division
fertilised egg cell grows by spliting into 2,forming embryo. cells continue to divide to form a ball of cells, then into an organism
What is mutation?
changes in genes which often alters the instruction that the gene carries
What is hybrid?
offspring of parents from 2 different species
What is an allele?
different versions of the same gene
what is a zygote?
fertilised egg cell
example of genetic disease?
cystic fibrosis
