9.6 METALS AND OXYGEN Flashcards
1
Q
State the order of reactivity, starting with the lowest.
A
Gold
Copper
Iron
Zinc
Magnesium
Sodium
2
Q
Metal + Oxygen -> ?
A
Metal Oxide
3
Q
Magnesium + Oxygen -> ?
A
Magnesium oxide
4
Q
How does sodium react with oxygen?
A
- Burn vigorously
- Mixture of products (sodium oxide, sodium peroxide)
- Reacts with oxygen without heating. As soon as you cut, the shiny surface reacts with oxygen. This makes white sodium oxide.
5
Q
How does zinc react with oxygen?
A
If you sprinkle zinc powder into Bunsen flame, you see bright white sparks. Zinc oxide forms.
6
Q
How does copper react with oxygen?
A
- Does not burn
- Forms black copper (copper oxide)
7
Q
How does gold react with oxygen?
A
No reaction
8
Q
What is reactivity?
A
Tendency of a substance to take part in chemical reactions.
9
Q
How does magnesium react with oxygen?
A
- Magnesium is metal
- Combustion reaction is vigorous
- There is a bright white flame
- Magnesium reacts with oxygen when you do not heat it
- Overtime, its surface atoms react with oxygen. Makes a thin layer of magnesium oxide (corrosion reaction)
