Q

How does sodium react with oxygen?

A
  1. Burn vigorously
  2. Mixture of products (sodium oxide, sodium peroxide)
  3. Reacts with oxygen without heating. As soon as you cut, the shiny surface reacts with oxygen. This makes white sodium oxide.

Q

How does magnesium react with oxygen?

A
  1. Magnesium is metal
  2. Combustion reaction is vigorous
  3. There is a bright white flame
  4. Magnesium reacts with oxygen when you do not heat it
  5. Overtime, its surface atoms react with oxygen. Makes a thin layer of magnesium oxide (corrosion reaction)
