9.3 Flashcards
what is a fuel give some examples
a fuel is a substance that releases useful heat when it burns.burning fuels are exothermic. ethanol, hydrogen and diesel.
what are the products of combustion
the products of combustion are the substances made when a fuel burns.
what is the combustion product of hydrogen
water
ethanol is the compound of what elements
ethanol is the compound of hydrogen , carbon, oxygen
what are greenhouse gases
greenhouse gases are gases which climate changes
write down the chemical equation of ethanol
ethanol + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water
what are the main products when diesel burns
carbon dioxide and water
what are diesels main compounds made of
carbon and hydrogen
talk abt the solid compounds of diesel
burning diesel makes small amounts of compounds that are solid at 20c. some of these products can increase the risk of cancer and other diseases
talk about crude oil
crude oil was formed a million years ago from dead sea animals. crude oil is a non renewable resource. we are using it much faster then it can be replaced
how is hydrogen fuel formed
hydrogen fuel is formed from methane. methane is formed from animal waste and on rubbish dumps. methane from these sources are renewable.
how is ethanol formed
ethanol fuel is made from plants like sugar cane this means ethanol is renewable.
talk about diesel ethanol and hydrogen’s convenience
diesel and ethanol are liquid at 20c this is why they are convenient to store and transport, hydrogen is gas at 20 this makes it difficult to store and transfer also the mixtures of hydrogen and air are explosive.
