9.2 God As Creator Flashcards
How Jews see God creating the Universe
The book of Genesis tells how God took six days to create the universe and everything in it. Many orthodox and ultra-orthodox Jews believe that this is the literal truth even though it neglects all theories of evolution as it says God created the universe 6000 years ago. Other Jews accept that an evolutionary theory may be correct but God made everything happen.
Why do Jews have the Shabbat
According to the creation story God took 4 days to get the universe fit to support life, 2 to create life and took 1 day to rest. This seventh day of rest became holy and was known as the Shabbat. Shabbat happens between sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday to allow Jews to remember Gods importance in the creation of everything.
Why God created Good and Evil
Jews don’t believe that the Devil created evil instead God created everything, good and evil. Jews believe that evil is necessary in order for people to choose good with their free will. Although this can be difficult to accept after events such as the Holocaust.
Why do Jews call God the sustainer?
They call God the sustainer because they believe he not only created the world but he will sustain it. This means that God provided sufficient resources to feed all species. They are distributed unequally because of human free will.
