- there was a second crusade because the islamic forces took over edessa which made the pope afraid so he called for another war and failed

- because a muslim general had taken over jerusalem which made several important kings decide to raise armies to take back the holy land though in the end they lost. but both sides decided to come to a truce which allowed christian pilgrams to be able to visit the holy lands
