9.1 - Matter And Energy Flashcards
Wave
transmit energy from one place to another without moving any matter over the same distance.
Transverse wave
wave involving the vibration of particles perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
Eg. Waves on water
Compression wave/longitude wave
wave involving the vibration of particles moving backwards and forwards in the same direction as energy transfer
Medium
Plural = media
The material which the waves travel through
Vibrations
repeated fast back-and-forth movements
Compression
Region where air particles are pushed/closer together.
Rarefaction
region where the particles are further apart (spread out).
Opposite to compression
Frequency
number of complete vibrations or waves made in one second.
Hertz
unit of frequency; its abbreviation is Hz.
One Hz is equal to one vibration every second.
Pitch
Highness or lowness of sound and its sound depends on the frequency of the vibrating air.
Wavelength
distance between two neighbouring crests of a wave.
Amplitude
maximum distance that each particle moves away from its usual resting position (height)
- think of latitude
