9.1 homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
what is homeostasis?
A
the state of dynamic equilibrium in the body despite changes in the external conditions
2
Q
what are examples of homeostasis in our body?
A
- body temperature: thermoregulation
- heart rate: blood pressure in the arteries
- breathing rate: monitor partial pressures of oxygen and CO2
- blood water and salts content: osmoregulation
3
Q
what are the two types of feedback systems?
A
- positive
- negative
4
Q
what is the negative feedback loop?
A
change in environment –> changed detected by receptor –> corrective mechanism signaled –> effector brings about required response –> conditions restored –> switch off effector
5
Q
what is the positive feedback system?
A
when the feedback loop signals to the effector to continue the changes and increase the output
6
Q
what is an example of a positive feedback system?
A
contractions in the uterus during labour
