9.1 Electricity Flashcards
Electric current
9.1.1 Current
Current is the flow of charge carriers.
9.1.2 The charge on Charge carriers is …
quantised and is always in multiples of the elemental charge based on how many electrons there are.
9.1.2 What is the elemental charge?
it is the fact that an electron has a charge of -1.6 * 10^-19 Coulombs.
9.1.3 What is the relationship between Charge, time, and Current?
Charge = current * time
Q = It
9.1.4 What is the equation for drift velocity? and what does each component mean?
I = nAve where:
I = current (A)
n = number density of charge carriers (m^-3)
A = cross sectional area (m^2)
v = Drift velocity (m/s)
e = usually elementary charge 1.6 * 10^-19 or charge for each charge carrier (C) but can also be (q) charge of each charge carrier.
Which way does conventional current go?
Positive to negative terminal, short end is the negative, long end is positive.
Which way do the electrons flow?
negative to positive terminal, short end is the negative, long end is positive.
