9.1 & 2 Flashcards
How are energy resources classified?
Renewable
Non-renewable
Recyclable
Give examples and percentage use of each energy resource type.
Non renewable (86%) - fossil fuels, oil, natural gas (stock/finite resources)
Renewable (9.3%) - HEP, solar, tidal (flow resource)
Recyclable (4.4%) - biofuels, nuclear power
How does geology impact energy resource distribution?
Fossil fuels found in sedimentary rock
Countries found on plate boundaries have geothermal energy (E.g. NZL) - can be used for electricity
How does relief and climate impact energy resource distribution?
High relief and rainfall is good for HEP
e.g. 3 Gorges Dam in China
Climate - e.g. wind is good for wind turbine, sunshine good for solar
What regional effects do fossil fuels and nuclear power have on the environment?
Air pollution
Acid rain from power stations
Nuclear leaks
What local effects do fossil fuels, nuclear power and renewable energy have on the environment?
Landscapes scarred by drilling
Oil spillages
Deforestation
Flooding from HEP
What global impacts do fossil fuels have on the environment?
GHG emission causes climate change
What is a general trend for global patterns in energy use?
Population and wealth increases rises energy demand.
What are 3 causes of variations in energy use?
Economic development - vital to growing economies, powers industry, household use
Economic sectors - due to sector change in the UK different sectors use different energy amounts
Traditional fuel sources - people use traditional fuel such as fire if they don’t have conventional energy resource access
