9. Sustainable Consumption Flashcards
Why SC?
- Environmental impact of products significantly increases at the point of consumption
- Population is growing so more people use more products and generate more waste emission
- Population is becoming richer and more people can afford unnecessary commodities
Role of Governments
- Breaking the link between economic growth and environmental pollution
- Improving resource efficiency
- Focusing on areas when enviro damage is greatest
- Examining whole lifecycle of a product through design, production, use and disposal, to help reduce effects on enviro
- Enabling consumers to receive more info on products and services
- Government utilising range of tools including taxes, voluntary agreements, subsidies, regulation and information campaign to stimulate innovation and investment to provide cleaner technology
Role of People
- Lifestyles determine to a high level the consumption of a number of goods that are not directly related to the fulfilment of essential needs
- Leisure, comfort, clothing, personal care and home & interior are responsible for one third of dustbin waste and they’re increasing
- Clear need to reduce the impacts of lifecycle consumption habits on society and resources to ensure equitable availability of resources for all around the world
- Education and training play and important role in achieving SC by creating a more critical and responsible attitude towards consumerism
Role of Businesses
- By developing more eco-friendly products and production systems. Referred to as sustainable innovation.
- By shaping the cultural context through responsible marketing and design of products for changing consumer behaviours towards sustainable consumption:
a) Choice Influencing – helping consumers make better choices about the product they buy and how they use them.
b) Choice Editing – shifting the field of choice for mainstream consumers: cutting out unnecessarily damaging products and getting real sustainable choices on the shelves - By developing sustainable business model through innovative approaches such as ‘Product Service Systems’
Product Service System
A sustainable business model that represents a step change in the way customers interact with the producer with the focus on developing services to meet the needs of the consumer without actually selling them the physical object
Benefits of Product Service System
Product durability and life-extension have more of a central focus in the product development process to reduce the longer-term casts associated with manufacturer maintenance
Less materials used and products created, reducing overall environmental load
Greater control over product returns
The value of end-of-life ‘design for X’ paradigms can be exploited by the manufacturers
