9. Storage and Fuel Cells Flashcards
1
Q
energy storage cells fancy name for
A
battery
2
Q
what are energy storage cells similar to
A
electrochemical cells
3
Q
how do fuel cells generate electricity
A
from reacting a fuel (usually hydrogen) with an oxidant (most likely to be oxygen)
4
Q
advantages of electrochemical cells (2 things)
A
1.more efficient at producing energy than conventional combustion engines (energy is wasted during combustion as heat)
2. produce less pollution such as CO2
for hydrogen fuel cells the only waste product is water
5
Q
drawbacks of using electrochemical cells for energy (2 things)
A
- proportion of the cells involves use of toxic chemicals which need to be disposed of once the cell has reached the end of its lifespan
- chemicals used to make cells often very flammable.e.g. lithium is highly reactive and will catch fire if a fault causes it to overheat
