what is the most common STI in the UK?
Chlamydia trachomatis (GNB)
What are the symptoms of chlamydia in males? in females?
Males - symptoms may be mild:
- urethritis
- dysuria
- epididmytis
Females - mostly asymptomatic:
- increased discharge
- post-coital or intermenstrual bleeds
- dyspareunia
How might delivery from a chlamydia +ve mother affect the baby?
conjunctivitis
how would you treat chlamydia?
doxycyline OR
azithromycin
how would Neisseria gonorrhea appear on gram stain?
gram negative diplococcus
What are the symptoms of gonorrhea in males? in females?
Males:
- urethral/anal discharge
- dysuria
Females - often asymptomatic:
- altered discharge
- lower abdominal pain
how would you treat gonorrhea?
IM Ceftriaxone + oral azithromycin
what is the causative agent of syphilis? how would you treat this?
Treponema pallidum - spirochete bacterium
Penicillin
Describe the 3 stages of syphillis.
Primary: genital or extra-genital painless ulcer (chancre)
Secondary (4-10wks later): rash, mucosal lesions, multi-system involvement
LATENT
Tertiary (up to 40yrs later): reactivation, e.g. neurogenic, cardiogenic
which MOs can cause oral/genital warts and how would you treat this?
Herpes simplex virus - Aciclovir
which organism can cause thin grey fishy smelling discharge?
Gardnerella vaginalis (gram negative rod)
