Transitive verb
a verb that takes an object
Adjective
a word that modifies a noun or pronoun: which one? what kind of? how many?
Determiner
adjective that makes specific sense of a noun
Adverb
a word that modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb
Preposition
a word that links a noun or pronoun to some other word in a sentence
Conjunction
joins words in a sentence
Subject
person, place, or thing that the sentence is about
Predicate
what the subject is doing, or what condition the subject is in
Direct object
the word or words that receive the action of the verb
Indirect object
comes before the direct object and answers the question to whom? or for whom? after the subject and verb
Predicate adjective
adjective that comes after a linking verb and describes the subject of the sentence
Phrase
a group of words that acts a particular part of speech or sentence but doesn’t have a verb and its subject
Clause
a group of words that acts a particular part of speech or sentence and has a verb and its subject
Restrictive clause
necessary to the basic meaning of the sentence
Nonrestrictive clause
can be eliminated from the sentence without changing its basic meaning
Verbal
hybrids that don’t act as verbs in a sentence, but as other parts of speech: participles, gerunds, and infinitives
Participle
part verb and part something else, but it is used as an adjective
Gerund
a word that begins with a verb and ends in -ing. Unlike a participle, a gerund acts like a noun
Infinitive
composed of “to” plus a verb. Usually used as nouns, but sometimes they are used as adjectives or adverbs
