9/14 Flashcards
What is Biotechnology?
the study and manipulation of living things or their component molecules, cells, tissues, or organs
What is a Product Development Plan?
In biotech, the stages of product development are commonly known to be the following: Preliminary research. Preclinical testing. IND-enabling studies. Clinical trials.
Antibody
proteins developed by the immune system that recognize specific molecules (antigens)
Applied Science
the practice of utilizing scientific knowledge for practical purposes, including the manufacture of a
product
Bioinformatics
the use of computers and databases to analyze and relate large amounts of biological data
Nanotechnology
all technologies that operate on a nanometer scale
What is OSHA
With the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for workers by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.
Antibiotics
molecular agents derived from fungi and/ or bacteria that impede the growth and survival of some
other microorganisms
Clinical Trial
a strict series of tests that evaluates the effectiveness and safety of a medical treatment in humans
Patent
A patent is a right granted by a governing body to an inventor that allows him/her to exclude others from making, selling, or using the invention for a certain amount of time.
Fermentation
a process by which, in an oxygen-deprived environment, a cell converts sugar into lactic acid or ethanol to create energy.
Selective Breeding
the parent selection and controlled breeding for a particular characteristic
Protease
proteins whose function is to break down other proteins
Research and Development (R & D)
the early stages of product development that include the discovery of the structure
and function of a potential product and initial small-scale production
Pure Science
scientific research whose main purpose is to enrich the scientific knowledge base
