Islam
Muslims who believe that the leaders of Islam do not need to be related to the founder, the prophet Muhammed. The dominant group of Islamic believers; approx. 85% of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims
Sunni
Muslims who believe that the leaders of Islam must be a blood-relative of the founder, the prophet Muhammed. Shiites usually also believe in a strict code of rules known as Sharia law.
Shi’a
the spread of something originally located in a small area to a larger area, such as language, culture, or religion
Diaspora
series of wars fought between the 11th and 13th centuries in which Christian Europeans attempted to
gain control of the Holy Land, especially Jerusalem, from the control of Islamic empires and Jewish residents
Crusades
a person from an Arabic speaking country in the Middle-East.(the region between Egypt to Iran and from
Turkey to Yemen)
Arab
a supporter of extreme beliefs/ideas that do not go along with the beliefs of the majority of a group.
Extremist
someone who believes in fundamentalism, a religious movement characterized by a strict belief in the literal interpretation of religious texts
Fundamentalist
a person involved in warfare or combat
Militant
the unlawful use of violence or threats to force people or a government into taking actions that meet the demands/objectives of the terrorists.
Terrorism
a “holy war” against non-believers
Jihad
Muslim guerilla fighters, especially in Afghanistan and Iran.
Mujahedin
means “the base in Arabic; broad-based militant organization responsible for the 911 and other terrorist attacks
Al-Qaeda
a Muslim fundamentalist group that seized control of Afghanistan.
Taliban
an intense rivalry for control between the United States (democracy/capitalism) and the Soviet Union (communism) that started in the late 1940s after WWII and ended in the early 1990s.
