9,10. Lymph Nodes, Mucous Membranes Flashcards
Methods of examination of lymph nodes
- inspection
- palpation
Additionally:
- aspiration
- biopsy
- excision
- extirpation
- x-ray, USG, CT, MR
What do we check in lymph nodes
- Size: >x1,5 suspicious
- Shape: ellipsoidal/round shape/special
- Consistency: soft rubber (firm)
- Structure: homogenous/ non-homogenous (lobulated)
- Pain: painful/ not painful
- Movability: unattached to surrounding tissues (no adhesions, easily movable)
- Surface: smooth or regular/ irregular
- Skin above: temperature, intactness, elasticity
- Symmetricity: compare
Six S
What is description of normal lymph node
Normal size (dependent on species and breed), round/ellipsoidal shape, soft rubber consistency, homogenous, not painful, easily movable, smooth surface, normal skin around (temperature, intactness, elasticity), lymph nodes are symmetrical
What lymph nodes can we palpate in healthy dog and cat?
- Mandibular/submandibular lnn (lnn. mandibulares)
- Prescapular lnn (lnn. cervicales superficiales)
- Popliteal lnn (*lnn. poplitei superficiales)
What lymph nodes we can’t palpate in healthy pets but can when they are pathologically enlarged?
- Retropharyngeal lnn (lnn. retropharyngei)
- Parotid lnn (lnn. parotidei)
- Axillary lnn (lnn. axillares)
- Superficial inguinal lnn (lc. inguinale superficiale)
- Mesenteric lnn (lnn. mesenterici)
Methods to evaluate mucous membranes
- inspection
- palpation
- smelling
Additionally:
- endoscopy
- USG
- x-ray, contrast x-ray
- discharge, secretion: quantitative, qualitative, microbiology, cytology
What mucous membranes do we check?
- Conjunctiva
- Nasal mm
- Oral mm
- Anal mm
- Genital mm
What do we check in case of mucous membrane?
- Colour
- Moisture (mucus, quantity, quality)
- Membrane vessels (injection, haemorrhages)
- Surface (intactness, smoothness, chemosis)
- CRT
Normal description of mucus membrane
Light pink (pigmented), smooth (conjunctiva: moderately ruffled), shiny, moist, intact, blood vessels can be slightly recognised, CRT < 2 sec
Conjunctiva: symmetrical
Abnormal findings in mucus membrane
- pale
- cyanotic
- yellow
- dull, dry, sticky
- livid
- haemorrhage
- dirty red
- lesions
- brown
- cherry red
- injected
- swelling (chemosis)
