8th Grade Science Flashcards
How was the Solar System Formed?
A cloud of dust and gasses started to be pulled together and rotate. Over time the dust and gasses flattened into a disk where the sun formed in the middle. As the remaining gasses and dust ran into each other they formed the planets.
What Materials Formed Earth
Gasses+Dust+Dense Rocks+Metals
Describe the Sources of Energy in Earths Interior
Collision of Particles
Radioactive decay
Gravitational potential energy
How did Earths Layers Form
During Earth’s molten faze, larger denser rocks and materials were pulled towards the center of the Earth b gravity which pushed the smaller objects towards the top.
Earth Compositional Layers (what they’re made of)
Crust
-Oxygen -Silicone -Aluminum
Mantle
-Magnesium -less silicone -les aluminum
Core
-Iron -nickel
Earth’s Physical Layers
Lithosphere
-Solid and brittle
Asthenosphere
-Soft mantle (puddy like)
Mesosphere
-Rocks flow slower than in the asthenosphere
Outer Core
-Liquid
Inner Core
-Solid
How do Scientist Detect Seismic Waves?
By using seismographs which can detect the seismic waves that earthquakes produce.
What is the Difference Between S waves and P waves
S waves- cause damage to buildings and are transversal waves
P waves- don’t cause damage and are compressional waves.
