Why do we need a wide variety of food?
To get all food substances we need - BALANCE DIET
What are the nutrients and what do we need the for
Carbohydrates, protein, fats, oils, vitamins and minerals
We need them to provide raw materials to make other substances for our body
CARBOHYDRATES
Example- starch + sugar
What it is needed- for energy (respiration)
Good sources- pasta, bread, rice + potatoes
PROTEINS
Why it is needed- for growth and repair.
Good sources- meat, fish and beans
VITAMINS
Example- vitamin c
Why it is needed- for health
Good sources- fruits +vegetables
MINERALS
Example- calcium
Why it is needed for health
Good sources- fruit, veg + dairy prod
FIBRE
Why it is needed- for health (constipation)
Good sources- whole meal bread/ rice, celery + other fibrous vegetables.
WATER
Why it is needed- for health
WHICH TESTS CAN WE DO TO FIND OUT SUBSTANCES THAT ARE IN TEST.
Starch- iodine solution
What do nutrition labels tell us about the product
How much energy the is stored in the substance that makes up the food.(measured in kilo joules)
How much energy people depend on.
Level of activity- more active more energy
Age -teens more than adults
Girl or boy- boy needs more energy
What does eating too much or too little cause
Too much fat- heart disease + overweight
Too little- starvation + weak
Other forms - deficiency disease = scurvy (lack of vitamin c)
What does digestion do?
Turns large insoluble substances to small solubles ones.
Digestive system helps us digest food.. many produce enzymes.
THE GUT
Food is digested in the gut.
MOUTH
Teeth grind up food and mix it with digestive juice (enzymes)
