8A Flashcards
What is protein needed for?
Growth and Repair
What are carbohydrates needed for?
Energy
What are vitamins needed for?
Health
What are minerals needed for?
Health
What is fibre needed for?
For health Helps stop constipation
What is water needed for?
Dissolves substances and fills up cells
Examples of Carbohydrates:
Starch and Sugars
Examples of Protein:
Meat & Fish
Examples of vitamins
Vitamin C, D, E etc
Examples of minerals:
Calcium
Examples of fibre:
Wholemeal Bread
Examples of Water:
Water
Good Sources of Carbohydrates:
Bread, Pasta
Good Sources of Protein:
Meat, Beans, Fish
Good sources of vitimins:
Fruits and Vegetables (e.g Oranges contain vitamin C)
Good sources of minerals:
Fruit, vegetables, dairy products (e.g milk contains a lot of calcium)
Good sources of fibre:
Wholemeal bread
Good sources of water:
Water related products!
Eating too much or too little can cause problems. What are they?
Eating too much may make you obese and when you are malnourished you may starve and become weaker.
What is energy measured in?
Kilojoules or ‘joules’
What may cause heart disease?
Obesity
What is the most common solvent?
Water
What is a solute?
Something that dissolves into a solvent to make a solution (solid.)
What is a solvent?
A solvent is a liquid that a solute is dissolved into to create a solution.
What is a solution?
A solute that has completely dissolved into a solvent
What is saturated?
Something that cannot have any more solute go into it. It happens when there is no more space for any more particles.
What happens to the mass when you dissolve a solute that has a mass of 10kg into water that has a mass of 15kg
The mass will go up. Just because the solute has dissolved does not mean it has disappeared! It is hidden among the solvent particles.
What happens when you put a insoluble solute into a solvent.
The water will go cloudy or the solute will sink to the bottom
Solutes other than water?
White spirit, ethanol
When we know the temperature of something….
We know how hot it is not how much thermal energy is in it
Thermal energy is measured in…
Joules
Temperature is measure in:
Degrees Celsius or *c
Wha happens when the particles vibrate
The object expands
What happens when the object cools down
It contracts
Convection takes place in fl uids (liquids and gases).
What is convection?
Particles spread further apart and the air becomes less dense and rises. As it rises it meets cooler air and passes the energy on. Having passed on the energy, it cools and becomes denser. The denser air sinks, setting up a cycle or convection current.
