How long does Shabbat last for?
A
Lasts from Friday evening to Saturday evening – begins when 3 stars appear

Shabbat’s purpose:
A
Time of relaxation, prayer and community marking the end of the week and the creation of the universe

How is Shabbat celebrated at home?
A
- Home tidied and cleaned
- Candles lit and prayer said by women (the Kiddush)
- Meal celebrated, songs sung to praise God
- Ends with blessing of wine and lighting candles.

How is Shabbat celebrated at the synagogue?
A
- Main service on the Saturday where prayers are said
- Especially important is the Amidah, the reading from the Torah and the Kaddish prayer praising God

Why is Shabbat important?
A
- It’s a Mitzvot from God & one of the 10 Commandments
- Means the community come together with God as the focal point of worship
- Time when faith can be learnt and explored

Shabbat - Sources of Wisdom:

- “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths.”
(Exodus 31:12) - “On the seventh day He rested and was refreshed”
(Exodus 31:17)

Shabbat - summary
A
- Essential weekly celebration.
- One of the 10 Commandments; built into creation of the world (God rested on the 7th day)
- Reminder of the freedom to rest since Jews were freed from slavery in Egypt. What counts as work is debated as difficult to keep in the modern world

A
- What counts as work is debated as difficult to keep in the modern world.
- Using a phone can be seen as creating a spark which is forbidden
- Reform would allow driving a car to the synagogue
- Orthodox would walk to the synagogue
